Project Overview
The Kaieteur National Park (KNP) is the oldest protected area in Guyana, originally established under the Kaieteur National Parks Act 1929 with the objective of preserving the falls and its immediate surroundings. The park currently encompasses an area of 62,700 ha and is managed by the Kaieteur National Park Board together with the National Parks Commission.
Chenapau Village is the closest Amerindian community to the KNP, with a population of approximately 500 persons. Residents of this community have historically occupied and utilized the resources of the area, including the park, for generations. Menzies Landing, a settlement within the KNP, is a transit point or landing area for travelers.
This project is therefore attempting to provide the financial and human resources required for the development of an Integrated Management Plan for the KNP with linkages to Chenapou. It is expected that the plan will define a strategy for effective management of the Park and its wider ecosystem encompassing natural resource use/conservation and monitoring, tourism development and business planning.
The management planning process will seek to engage the expertise and contributions of a wider stakeholder group which will include governmental and non governmental agencies, indigenous communities, private sector, researchers, and civil society. View Management Plan
